Botanical Name: Sedum morganianum
Common Name: Donkey Tail Succulent Hanging Basket
Flower: Red pink, yellow or white. When: Summer. (Though rarely indoors)
Features: These beautiful succulents are native to Honduras and Mexico. Like other succulents they thrive with a little neglect making them great for beginners. Be mindful of their leaves though, they’re very delicate and fall off easily. They propagate easily from leaf cuttings though, so just drop the fallen leaf into the pot and a new stem will start in no time. TIP: You can tell these apart from their close relative Baby Donkey Tail because their leaves are much larger and come to a point at the end.
Light: Choose a warm, sunny window with several hours of daylight.
Water: Well drained, sandy soil. Water well and allow it to dry out completely before watering again. If leaves start to wrinkle, it is time to water. Never let water sit on the leaves, this will cause rot or fungal diseases. It is better to underwater than overwater these plants. Do not let the plant sit in drainage. Reduce watering schedule in winter.
Temperature: Normal household temperature is good. They do not tolerate cold temperatures or drafts.
Humidity: Thrive in hot, dry conditions. Too much humidity can lead to root rot. Average household humidity is good.
Fertilizer: Dilute a balanced houseplant fertilizer to 1/4 strength and use once a year in spring.
Harmful to pets?: No. These plants are safe for pets and children. The best practice is always to keep houseplants out of reach of small children and pets.
